Steroids as we know them were first made in the 1930’s. Before this people regularly used other substances such as amphetamine and cocaine to boost energy and performance. Today individuals take a range of image enhancing drugs with an over concern about how they look, rather than how they perform.

Course description

This is a one day course on performing & image enhancing drugs. The course covers;

  • PIEDS throughout history and popular culture

  • Popular PIEDS and why people use them

  • How PIEDS work – A biology lesson

  • Cost and benefit analysis of PIEDS

  • Safer Injecting

  • Reducing Harm

  • PCT – Examples of PCT to take, how to use it, why you should use it

  • The Law

  • Developing your service

Aims and objectives

  • Increase knowledge of Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs

  • Dispel myths

  • Increase knowledge of how PIEDS work and their effects upon individual’s physical and mental health

  • Increase confidence and competency in working with this population group

  • Promote ideas of how to shape your service to meet the needs of those using PIEDS

Target audience

This course is primarily targeted at drug services who are coming into contact with individuals who are using performance & image enhancing drugs. It will also be of interest to those who wish to further their knowledge in this area.

Drug and alcohol national occupational standards

Day One:

  • AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists.

  • HSC233 Relate to, and interact with, individuals.

  • HSC3111 Promote the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of individuals.

  • HSC33 Develop your own knowledge and practice.

The course will be delivered by Jasmin Mulrooney & Tony D’Agostino

Costs: £130 per person. Lunch and refreshments provided.
